Industries

weatherXchange®p; makes it easy to design and buy index-based weather protection by offering standard weather risk contract types that cover typical risk profiles for different industries. These are a starting point in tailoring a weather protection contract to your needs.

Once designed, a contract can be saved. Each contract is private to your login. A saved contract can be copied and modified to make it easy to compare the costs and benefits of variations of different parameters of a contract: for example the impact of changing the level of an index at which a payout starts. At any point, weatherXchange personnel are available to assist with technical questions, although we are unable to provide formal Investment Advice. We can however easily put you in touch with Broker-Advisors are who are able to do so.

When you are ready, weatherXchange then makes it easy to request prices from multiple Protection Sellers: just click on the Get Prices button. This then automatically emails a full description of the weather protection contract you need to the Protection Sellers you choose. Alternatively, it is easy to send the contract to a Broker-Advisor to request advice about it. You are free to negotiate with them the terms on which they can act on your behalf to get the best price.

weatherXchange currently provides list about 3,000 tradable Reference Stations and Baskets worldwide. If data is not available for a location near you, please contact us. We may be able to source more data or, if you have a weather station, it may be possible to use data from that subject to quality checks. We are also able to provided gridded data worldwide.

Energy

Weather protection based on sum of daily Cooling Degree Days (CDD) over the Protection Period. CDD is often used as a proxy for air conditioning power demand in summer. For a given day the CDD value is equal to the Daily Average Temperature less 18C (or 65F in USA). If the Daily Average Temperature is lower than the 18 (65) Threshold, then zero CDDs accrue for that day. The daily CDD values are added up for the Protection Period.

Weather protection based on sum of daily Heating Degree Days (HDD) over the Protection Period. HDD is often used as a proxy for heating demand in winter. For a given day the HDD value is equal to 18C (65F in USA) less the Daily Average Temperature. If the Daily Average Temperature is higher than the 18 (65) Threshold, then zero HDDs accrue for that day. The daily HDD values are added up for the Protection Period.

Weather protection which combines the concept of HDD and CDD and is used as a proxy for power demand. If the Daily Average Temperature is above 18C (or 65F in USA) then the contribution to the index equals Daily Average Temperature less 18 / 65. If the Daily Average Temperature is below 18C (or 65F in USA) then the contribution to the index equals 18/65 less the Daily Average Temperature. The daily values are added up for the Protection Period.

Weather protection based on the sum of Daily Average Temperature (TMin+TMax)/2) for each day accumulated over the Protection Period.

Weather protection based on the sum of Daily Average-T24 values accumulated over the Protection Period. In Europe,Average-T24 is usually the average of the spot hourly temperature readings from UST 0100 to 2400 inclusive, but this may differ from country to country. Please Contact Us for more information.

Weather protection based of the number of days over the Protection Period where Daily TMax is above or equal to a user-selected Threshold

Weather protection based of the number of days over the Protection Period where Daily TMin is less than or equal to a user-selected Threshold

The Daily Energy Index is a derived measure of energy use from observed weather data and historical patterns of energy use. Population-weighted baskets for regional areas, and industry standard measures of Gas and Electricity demand are used to define and optimize the index parameters. The Energy Index Average is the average of the Daily Energy Index over the length of the contract.

The Energy Index Cumulative is the sum of the Daily Energy Index over the length of the contract.

Renewables

Weather protection based on total precipitation over the Protection Period.

Weather protection based on Daily Average Wind Speed summed for each day over the Protection Period

Weather protection based on the number of days over the Protection Period where Daily Average Wind Speed is below or equal to a user-selected Threshold

Weather protection based on the number of days over the Protection Period where Daily Average Wind Speed is above or equal to a user-selected Threshold

Weather protection based on the average daily value of Solar Radiation (using "Global" measurement convention)

Weather protection based on the number of days over the Protection Period where total Daily Global Solar Radiation is above or equal to a user-selected Threshold

Weather protection based on the number of days over the Protection Period where total Daily Global Solar Radiation is below or equal to a user-selected Threshold

Weather protection based on the cumulative value of Daily Global Solar Radiation over the Protection Period

Agriculture

Weather protection based on total precipitation over the Protection Period. The payout depends on how much the total precipitation is above or equal to a user-chosen level.

Weather protection based on total precipitation over the Protection Period. The payout depends on how much the total precipitation is below or equal to a user-chosen level

Weather protection based on the number of days over the Contract Period when Daily Maximum Temperature exceeds a user-selected daily Threshold

Weather protection based on the number of days over the Contract Period when Daily Minimum Temperature falls below a user-selected daily Threshold. The Threshold is usually freezing or below.

Weather protection based on the occurrence of a user-selected number of Consecutive Days during which the Daily Minimum Temperature drops below a user-selected Threshold. The Threshold is usually freezing or below. Please Contact Us for more important information on how this index is calculated.

Construction

Weather protection based on the number of days in the Protection Period where Daily Precipitation exceeds a user-specified Threshold

Weather protection based on the occurrence of a user-selected number of Consecutive Days during which the Daily Precipitation exceeds a user-selected Threshold on each day. Please Contact Us for more important information on how this index is calculated.

Weather protection based on cumulative precipitation over the Protection Period where the payout starts above a user-selected level.

Weather protection based on the number of days over the Contract Period when Daily Minimum Temperature falls below a user-selected Threshold. This may, for example, relate to freezing conditions relating to problems with setting concrete.

Weather protection based on the number of days over the Contract Period where the Daily Max Wind Gust Speed recorded on a given day exceeds a user-selected Threshold. This may, for example, relate to problems with crane operation.

Retail & Wholesale

Weather protection based on the number of days in the Protection Period where Daily Precipitation exceeds a user-specified Threshold

Weather protection based on the number of days over the Contract Period where Daily Maximum Temperature is above or equal to a user-selected Threshold. This may, for example be a temperature above which it is observed that there is reduced footfall in stores or above which certain weather-sensitive product lines start to sell.

This may, for example be a temperature below which it is observed that there is reduced footfall in stores or below which certain weather-sensitive product lines start to sell.

Tourism & Leisure

Weather protection based on the number of days in the Protection Period where Daily Precipitation exceeds a user-specified daily Threshold

Weather protection based on cumulative Precipitation over the Protection Period exceeding a user-selected level

Weather protection based on the number of days in the Protection Period where Daily Snow Depth is below or equal to a user-specified Threshold. This could, for example, be the minimum snow depth required to open a ski-ing piste.

Weather protection based on the average Daily Snow Depth during the Protection Period

Weather protection based on the absolute minimum Daily Snow Depth over the Protection Period

Weather protection based on the number of days in the Protection Period where Daily Temperature Maximum exceeds a user-specified Threshold

Weather protection based on the number of days in the Protection Period where Daily Minimum Temperature falls below a user-specified Threshold, usually freezing or below

Weather protection based on the number of days in the Protection Period where Daily Snow depth is above or equal to a user-specified Threshold.

The Snow Depth Critical Daily is a user-defined threshold provided in centimetres or inches, and defines a critical event, triggering a financial payout. For example a measured cumulative amount of snow greater than 5cm could trigger a closure or road clearing.
